Temporary Foreign Workers

The Temporary Foreign Worker Program allows foreign workers to work in Canada for a short period of time. The TFWP typically provides employment to workers for 6 months. The work permit can be extended as well. Foreign workers can only work for one employer under TFWP.

When the work permit is about to expire, workers have to apply for an extension or have to leave Canada

Requirements for Temporary Foreign Worker Program

First of all, a Canadian employer must have a Labor Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to hire a temporary foreign worker. The employer has to apply for LMIA to the Canadian government.

Once the employer has LMIA, the foreign employee has to meet the following requirements.

You must:

  • have a job offer letter from your Canadian employer.
  • prove to an immigration officer that you will leave Canada once your work permit is expired.
  • prove you have enough money to stay in Canada and return to you home country.
  • have a clean criminal record;
  • must be in good health;
  • prove that your employer is not inviting you for striptease, erotic dance, erotic massage, or escort services, etc.

How to Apply?

Once you receive the LMIA, you can apply for the work permit to the Canadian Consulate: either through the website or through a Consulate office in your country.
