International Experience Canada (IEC)

International Experience Canada (IEC) is a set of programs that allows foreign nationals to travel to Canada to work temporarily. Foreign nationals with skills and experience in one of the IEC programs can apply for a Canadian work permit. One doesn’t need a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) to apply for a work permit. IEC authorizes foreign workers to stay temporarily in Canada, for a maximum of one year.

The selection of applicants depends on the quota and for different countries, there is a different quotas.  IEC work permits are approved through a randomized draw system.

The IEC operates three separate programs and each program has unique requirements.

  • Working Holiday Visa
  • Young Professionals
  • International Co-op

1. Working Holiday Visa

The Working Holiday visa allows travelers to freely work for any employers in Canada. Applicants receive an open work permit under the Working Holiday program. The Working Holiday program is the best option for foreign individuals who want to work in Canada:

  • without a job offer from a Canadian employer.
  • with the freedom to change the employer and work for more than one employer.
  • with the freedom to live in different locations in Canada.
  • to earn money while traveling.

Canada approves applications for the Working Holiday Visa according to the predetermined quotas. So, interested applicants have to first verify the quotas for their country before applying for the program.

2. Young Professionals

The Young Professionals program offers foreign individuals to get professional work experience in Canada. Applicants must have a job offer from a Canadian employer before applying for the Young Professionals program. Once the application is approved, successful candidates get an employer-specific work permit with which they can work for one specific employer in Canada.

Candidates with a position in one of the National Occupation Classification (NOC) Skill Level 0, A, or B jobs are considered to be perfect for this program. Quotas for this program vary between countries.

3. International Co-op

The International Co-op Internship program is designed to provide international students with an internship or work placement in Canada which is required for the compilation of their post-secondary education. Once the application for the International Co-op program is approved, applicants get an employer-specific work permit that allows them to work for the same employer in Canada.

Canada approves applications for The International Co-op Internship program from the predetermined quotas and the quotas vary between countries.
