Family Sponsorship
Being a nation with a commitment to family reunification, Canada knows what it feels like to stay away from your loved ones. As a solution, Canada offers its citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their family members to immigrate to Canada as permanent residents.
As a Canadian permanent resident, you have four opportunities to sponsor your family members.
1. Sponsor Spouse, Partner or Dependent Child
Canadian spousal sponsorship allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, or dependent child to join them in Canada as permanent residents.
Eligibility to Sponsor Your Partner
You can sponsor your partner if:
- You are at least 18 years old.
- You are a Canadian citizen or permanent resident of Canada.
- You are not receiving social assistance except for a disability.
- You are abba to support your partner financially in Canada. You have to provide your partner with his/her basic needs such as Housing, food and personal hygiene products, clothing and other necessary items, and medical expenses.
Cost to Sponsor Your Spouse or Partner to Canada?
The total cost to sponsor your spouse or partner in Canada is $1,135 CAD. In the following table is the breakdown of costs.

How Can I Apply?
You have to submit the following two applications at the same time:
- Application to sponsor your spouse or partner.
- Application for permanent residence for your spouse or partner.
Application to sponsor a spouse is a four-step process.
It may take up to 12 months for your application to be approved.
2. Sponsor Parents or Grandparents
Canadian parent and grandparent sponsorship program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents to immigrate to Canada.
Eligibility to Sponsor Your Parents or Grandparents
You can sponsor your parents or grandparents if you:
- are a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
- have received an invitation to apply.
- are at least 18 years old.
- live in Canada.
- are able to provide basic needs of your parents and grandparents in Canada.
If you are unable to permanently support your parents or grandparents in Canada, you can apply for a Super Visa for them.
3. Parents and Grandparents Program (Super Visa)
The Parents and Grandparents Super Visa program allows Canadian citizens and permanent residents to sponsor their parents or grandparents to immigrate to Canada. With the Super Visa, your parents and grandparents can enter Canada for a period of 10 years, and up to 2 years at a time.
Who Can Sponsor Their Parents and Grandparents?
You have to meet the following criteria to sponsor your parents or grandparents.
- You must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
- You must receive an invitation to apply.
- You must be at least 18 years of age.
- You must live in Canada.
- You must be able to provide basic needs of your parents and grandparents in Canada.
Who Can Sponsor Their Parents and Grandparents?
You must submit an interest to sponsor application to the IRCC PGP portal and once your application is approved, you receive an invitation to apply.
After receiving your invitation to apply for the PGP, you may proceed with the submission of your application to sponsor your parents and grandparents. You will have to include the following document with your application,
- Completed application forms.
- Proof of physical presence in Canada.
- Proof of status in Canada.
- Civil status documents.
- Proof you meet the income requirement for the last 3 tax year
- Police Certificate.
- Medical Certificate.
- Proof of payment for applicable government fees.
You will have to submit the application to IRCC online. The application must be submitted within 60 days after you receive the invitation to apply. The deadline to submit will be indicated on the invitation to apply letter you received from IRCC.
4. Adopted Child & Other Eligible Relatives
As a citizen or permanent resident, you can sponsor your adopted child and other eligible relatives as well for permanent residency.
If must fulfill the following criteria to sponsor your adopted child or a relative to immigrate to Canada as a permanent resident.
- You must be a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada.
- You must be at least 18 years of age.
- You must receive an invitation to apply.
- You must be able to provide basic needs (food, clothing, shelter, etc) of your adopted child or your relative in Canada.
- Medical and criminal certificates of your adopted son or relative should be submitted.
Who You Can Sponsor?
You can sponsor one relative, related by blood or adoption such as your brother, sister, nephew, niece, or grandchild only if:
- He or she is orphaned.
- He or she is under 18.
- He or she doesn’t have a spouse, common-law partner, or conjugal partner.
If the one you want to sponsor has a spouse, partner, or dependent children and wants them to come with him or her to Canada then you must include them on the sponsorship application.
